Introduction
------------
As you may imagine, it is not easy to provide an installation routine
for a piece of software which is meant to install/maintain the software
on your network/workstation.
As the configuration of the WinMan scripts depends on your personal disk
structure as well as your preferences (e.g. Menu titles, notification
messages), we provide a limited setup routine which supports a list of
applications documented later in this file.
This 'Base Installation' will allow you to get a first understanding of
WinMan's functionalities. Please take the time to experience this system
and use this understanding to go on with the implementation of a complete
WinMan system in your environment.
The environment which gets installed automatically provides the following
items:
Applications: Automated Setup, Repairing and Update of...
- Microsoft WinWord 2.x
- Microsoft Excel 4.x
- Microsoft Powerpoint 3.x
- Microsoft Mail 3.x
- Microsoft Project 3.x
- Microsoft Access 1.x
- Microsoft Windows Utilities
Drivers: Automated Setup, Repairing and Update of...
- HP LaserJet II,III,IV models
- Windows Postscript Driver
Support Tools...
- FirstAid, the local and remote support feature (see seperate chapter)
Basic Options of a WinMan system not covered by automatic installation:
- Automatic installation of Windows itself including
- Configuration of printers
- Video drivers
- Country settings
- Keyboard settings
- ...
- Automatic configuration/startup of menu system
To implement such functions please do not hesitate to contact us. We can
provide sample instructions to add such functionality.
You can find later in this document a more detailed description of the
functionality of the implementation of each application as well as the list
of files which will be overwritten by WinMan. During the installation of
WinMan the Setup routine will copy files which could be overwritten into
a seperate directory (\BACKUP.WM under your Windows user directory) to
avoid damages or loss of settings in case of problems. Please be aware
that running the installation routine more the once would copy the files
again in their most recent status !
Installation
------------
Prerequisites: - Windows 3.x/Windows for Workgroups 3.x
- Workstation running Windows in 386 Enhanced Mode
- 0.5 MB of disk space for WinMan application files
(per WS or central on network, depends on installation)
- about 15 KB of disk space per user on networks
- max. 200 KB RAM during execution within Windows
(no TSR/drivers required before loading Windows)
- a copy of BWCC.DLL (can be found on Compuserve,
GO BPASCAL, Library 10 Windows Tools)
The test installation of WinMan reads settings of the applications currently
installed in your Windows to find out which applications are available.
There for make sure the workstation you use to run the initial installation
is a Windows system which is fully configured on your needs (Windows incl.
requested applications). You will find later a description how to port such
a configuration to additional systems without the need to configure them
(except Windows itself).
The files in the downloaded ZIP file are prepared to run off any drive/sub-
directory you copy it to. If you remove the documentation ZIP files, you
can copy the installation files also to a floppy disk (1.44MB) please make
sure to use the -D parameter when unzipping. This will preserve the directory
structure.
Make sure the Windows System directory contains a copy of BWCC.DLL. This is
the Borland runtime Library. If you don't have this file, please download
it from CompuServe, GO BPASCAL, Library 10 Windows Tools.
To run the installation please first choose the type of setup you need.
The 'Standalone Installation' simply installs WinMan for the usage of your
locally installed Windows. The 'Network Installation' offers you basically
the same functionality but runs the files off a common network drive. This
allows you to add easily additional workstations to your test environment
(e.g. to test the network support features). Please be aware that the
Network installation just reads the settings of the machine you are working
on and there for will use this settings on any additional machine.
Standalone Installation
-----------------------
1. Start Windows
2. Insert the floppy into any drive and run x:INSTALL.EXE, where
'x' marks the drive letter of the drive you inserted the floppy to
3. INSTALL requires now the directory where it should install the
WinMan application files. By default this is the \WINMAN subdirectory
within the Windows System directory. You may choose any drive/directory
you want.
4. Now start the installation and wait until the task is complete.
5. This completes the installation of WinMan. To make it active, now
simply run WINMAN.EXE off the Windows system directory you have
choosen, or even better, use the Filemanager to drag WINMAN.EXE into
the AutoStart group to make it active at every startup of the
workstation.
Once you've completed the configuration of one system you can simply copy
it to additional systems by copying the contents of the WinMan appli-
cation directory plus the following files within the Windows system
directory to the new system:
WINMAN.EXE
WINMAN.INI
BW_SHELL.DLL
BW_TOOL.DLL
BW_DDE.DLL
FBDLL.DLL
BWCC.DLL
Then startup Windows on this machine and add WINMAN.EXE to the AutoStart
group of your menu system.
Network Installation
--------------------
If you are running a shared
copy of Windows on the network server you will require
supervisory rights to write to this area. If you are running a
local copy of Windows, you should choose a common network drive to
install WinMan. This will allow easy distribution to any additional
users you may wanne use WinMan. Please be aware that you can run
WinMan off a networked installation of WinMan without any risk to
disturb any other users configuration, as the only file which may
be used by other users is the BWCC.DLL (Borland control library).
4. Now start the installation and wait until the task is complete.
5. This completes the installation of WinMan. To make it active, now
simply run WINMAN.EXE off the WinMan application directory you have
choosen, or even better, use the Filemanager to drag WINMAN.EXE into
the AutoStart group to make it active at every startup of the
workstation.
6. If you want to use WinMan on additional workstations, simply add
WINMAN.EXE to the AutoStart group of the users configuration. If
You installed WinMan into a different directory then the WINMAN
subdirectory within the Windows system directory, make sure all
necessary users have read access to this directory. If you are
running a local installation of Windows, you have to copy the
following files from the workstation you used for the original setup
into the Windows system directory:
WINMAN.EXE
WINMAN.INI
BW_SHELL.DLL
BW_TOOL.DLL
BW_DDE.DLL
FBDLL.DLL
BWCC.DLL
IMPORTANT (for Standalones and networked Workstations)
------------------------------------------------------
Do not register WINMAN.EXE in the RUN= or LOAD= commandline of WIN.INI,
as this would require to provide also scripts to start your menu system
and so on. This is part of a complete WinMan setup and not the test
setup you are installing right now.
Documentation
-------------
If you recieve this via floppy disk, the floppy contains the current WinMan
documentation in a file called WMDOC.ZIP which is in the common PKZIP format.
To unpak this file, copy it to a harddisk drive and use PKUNZIP WMDOC.ZIP.
The file will use about 2 MB of diskspace when expanded.
If you downloaded these files from Compuserve, the documentation can be found
in a seperate file WMDOC.ZIP in the same Forum you downloaded the WM15.ZIP.
The documentation is in WINWORD 2.0 format and formatted for duplex
printing on a HP LaserJet 4si. To print it, select duplex printing - short
edge binding in the Printer setup panel.
Also check the document FAMILIAR.ZIP which contains some information to
get easier familiar with the product.

------------------
Following you will find more detailed information which versions of the
applications we tested together with the test scripts. If you want to
